Share From the Chair, Judy Stahl Dear DWPA Members and Friends,
I’m honored to be your new DWPA Chair. I will be sending a personal message regularly in our newsletter on topics of the day. Feel free to reach out to me with your thoughts. Our personal connection to each other is the key to our success as a living, breathing organization of Democratic women and friends.
The second impeachment trial of the previous president, held on the grounds that he incited a deadly insurrection against our democracy and our nation, has just ended. The trial, which required 67 votes in order to convict, ended this afternoon with an acquittal. 57 Senators voted guilty. 43 Republican Senators voted to acquit.
After the trial, Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority leader, condemned the impeached president in sharp terms saying he was “practically and morally responsible” for the deadly invasion of our nation’s Capitol on January 6th. However, McConnell, who voted to acquit, attempted to absolve himself of responsibility for the acquittal by saying that it was not possible to convict since the former president is no longer in office. McConnell neglects to point out that he himself is the sole reason why an impeachment trial did not move forward while the past president was still in office.
Stories such as this can be incredibly disheartening. The level of cynicism displayed by McConnell is some thing I hope never to fathom. However, there are silver linings here.
The Democratic House Impeachment Managers, led by Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, did a masterful job of laying out their case to convict the previous president of incitement to violence and insurrection by his rabid followers. It was broadcast for the entire world to witness and is now in the Congressional record for perpetuity.
Joe Biden is the President of the United States and, in just three plus weeks, is setting a rapid pace accomplishing the people’s work, including acquiring 200 million more doses of the Covid vaccine this past week, thus ensuring that 300 million Americans will be fully vaccinated by July. Finally, while it is certainly not happening in my timeframe, the disgraced former president can, and very likely will, be held accountable for his crimes in both criminal and civil court.
We have survived so much and worked so hard, but there is still more to go. It is up to you and me to ensure that our democracy survives this terrible onslaught by the people who were elected to serve us. It has always been, whether we realized it or not, up to us to stand and speak and take action to defend and preserve our democracy. DWPA members and friends, I promise that there’s plenty of work for us to do for the foreseeable future! With your help, we will continue to succeed at shining the light of our Democratic values for all to find. We welcome all who seek truth and love our country to join us and be a part of our wonderful community.
Our next membership meeting will be Wednesday, February 24, on zoom from 1 PM to 2:30. I hope to see you all there as we welcome Donna Michaels to share about her experience as our newly elected Yavapai County Supervisor for District 3. As more people are able to get the vaccine, we progress towards the time when we can meet again together in person to share a meal, hugs, and laughter. Until that day, stay safe and stay in touch.
Best to you.
Sen Kyrsten Sinema likes to wear colorful wigs and avant-garde dresses in the stodgy Senate.
Do you know what’s not super modern? SUPPORTING THE FILIBUSTER AND THE BYRD RULE, THAT’S WHAT.
The creaky Senate Filibuster, which allows Senators to lift a finger to stop any legislation, will prevent passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, as well as a slate of reforms to strengthen our beleaguered democracy. The equally obsolete Byrd Rule would potentially prevent attaching a $15 federal minimum wage to the budgetary provisions of the COVID relief bill. CALL SEN SINEMA (602-598-7327; 520-639-7080, or 202-224-4521) and tell her Arizona voters want democracy reform, COVID relief, AND a $15 federal minimum wage. #EndTheFilibuster
Not on RTS (Request to Speak)?
You can check out how to sign up and use Request to Speak on the dwpaaz.org website OR
Join the RTS “rapid response” training presented by the Central Yavapai League of Women Voters so you are ready to go into action when bills we are following are put on committee agendas. We will review the basics, and then we will meet in breakout rooms where you will try it out while the presenters are on hand to answer questions. Fri., Feb. 19 is the last day that bills can be heard in their originating chamber. Bills that don’t make it out of committee by then are essentially “dead.” Those that survive and are approved on the floor will be referred to the other chamber, with the possibility of hearings again. Sessions are:
Tues. Feb 16, 6:30p –
Wed. Feb 17, 6:30p –
