Why You Need to Act and Defend Democracy!

If you haven’t yet seen it, take a second to watch Indivisible Co-Executive Director Ezra on Rachel Maddow last week, and then share it with a friend. It’s a little out of date now (it was from before the Republican filibuster of S.1 that we’ll need to overcome when the Senate returns) but it gives a great overview of the Deadline for Democracy campaign. Then if you’re feeling inspired, chip in a few bucks to help fund this week of action and all our work.Ezra summarized it well on Maddow the other night, so we want to leave you with his words: “Politicians have a very scientific method for figuring out what they’re going to do. They lick their finger, they stick it up in the air, and they see which way the wind is going to blow… If we are successful in changing the way the wind blows over the course of the July 4th recess, they’re going to take this up again, they’re going to amend the filibuster, and they’re going to pass these voting rights reforms.”                                                      National Phone Bank: Calling Voters in ArizonaWednesday, July 7, 7:00pmOnline Zoom ~ RSVP HereIt’s time for national standards for voting so all of us have a say in key decisions like affordable care, quality jobs, and a healthy future. Together, we can ensure Americans can safely and freely cast our ballots so that every voice is heard and our elections reflect the will of the people. But every day, we get closer to a very real deadline to take action to pass the For the People Act.

This week’s Legislature Weekly is a must-read summary of the most chaotic, nasty, hard-fought session in memory. Read Melinda Iyer’s wrap-up edition to get the full picture.  CEBV’s SESSION WRAP-UP HAPPY HOUR is Sunday, July 11 at 4 pm. Sign up HERE!
The $12.8 billion budget that Republicans passed includes a massive income tax cut and funding for various capital projects. But Democrats assailed it on the final day, arguing that the budget didn’t do enough to help students and educators. Lawmakers also put a provision in the budget to create a committee to review the findings of the Senate’s audit of Maricopa County and gives outside agencies the authority to review voter rolls. For a checklist on what the Republican led legislature passed, read this article from the AZ Mirror.

Stop Voter Suppression LawsAZ Deserves Better and Stop Dark Money Partner!
Petitions for all initiatives are at the
Yavapai County Democratic Headquarters
1555 Iron Springs Rd., Prescott.

Now Open 11-3 Mon-Fri.

Sat. July 10, 24, Aug. 7, 21, Sept. 4, 18  Please stop by, sign petitions and take them to gather signatures. Time is of the essence for the referendum initiative petitions because they only have 90 days from the day the current legislative session ends in which to get 150,000 signatures statewide (118,000 valid and then a buffer) in order to stop this law from taking effect and instead refer it to the ballot for the November 2022 election.
If you want to help (and there is lots to do in the next 90 days), contact Diane McQueen, Ground Game Coordinator, Stop Dark Money, [email protected] 928-699-4308. Notarized petitions can be dropped off at YavDem Headquarters anytime.  A notary is also available on Saturdays and Thursday afternoons. AZ Deserves Better has filed two referendum initiatives; one on the new PEVL law and HB2569 which prohibits state and local governments from accepting private monies to help conduct elections, including voter registration (petitions for HB2569 will be in the office on 7/10)..

Petitions are being circulated in order to place controversial laws on the ballot, where Arizona’s voters can vote up or down. In order to put these bills on the ballot, we have only 90 days from the adjournment of the Legislature to collect the signatures for each bill.
You know that Arizona went for Biden by only 11,000 votes in a state with a population of more than seven million. The opposition is throwing everything they can think of at the voters, hoping to chip away a little here, a little there. It’s the only way they believe they can continue in office against the will of the people.  Website: https://AZDeservesBetter.org  About Stop Dark Money (formerly Outlaw Dirty Money)
After pausing the last campaign due to the pandemic, Stop Dark Money has rebranded and is back with a legislative initiative with the goal to collect 300, 000 voter signatures to get on the November 2022 ballot. The initiative is spearheaded by Terry Goddard, former Arizona Attorney General.Don’t feel like you’re doing enough? Check out this newsletter – Chop Wood, Carry Water (daily action for a better tomorrow). There are many suggestions to phone, write, join in campaigns. Jessica Craven also has a series of podcasts. A Message from Toni Denis, former DWPA Chair,
AFDW President,
founder of AZFPI – Arizonans for Promoting Integrity, a nonpartisan 501(c)4:

Ithe interest of the future of Prescott, I’m writing to ask you to consider supporting a nonpartisan PAC I founded with Republican and Independent board members which will promote candidates who are interested in preserving the water supply and slowing down growth. Please read the attached letter, and if you can donate $20 or more, you can influence getting the word out to those who can vote.  Go to the AFPI website for more information and to donate.
