Indivisibles,
Can you believe we have less than a month until 2022? Even though the year is almost over, there is still so much work to be done in the fight for reconciliation and democracy reform. First of all, let’s talk about reconciliation. As we are sure you remember, the House of Representatives stuck to their promises, and passed Biden’s full Build Back Better agenda (BBB). Now the bill has made its way to the Senate, where we have to work to urgently push senators to pass BBB as soon as possible. Biden’s full Build Back Better Agenda will make badly needed public investments across the economy, so we need to keep pushing for a vote to get past the last few hurdles (including pushback from our usuals: Sens. Manchin and Sinema).
Now for democracy: There was a failed procedural vote on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act on November 3. Senator Schumer has sent out another “Dear Colleague” letter to his fellow senators. In this letter, Schumer states that even if he cannot get enough GOP support behind the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Advancement Act, Senate Democrats are not going to stop fighting to “restore our democracy” — even if they have to go at it alone. Indivisibles who live in Republican states have gotten together to write Senator Schumer and other Senate Democrats a letter of their own — reminding them how important it is to our democracy that the Freedom to Vote Act and then John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act are passed. It’s on us to keep pushing for Democrats to fix the filibuster and pass this massively popular bill.
With that, here are your weekly to-dos:
