Those of us confronting the endless attacks on democracy and our very humanity need this hour of inspiration, humor, and healing. In my journey coping with defeat, fear, and discouragement I encountered Nora McInerny and her beautiful podcast “Terrible, Thanks for Asking,” a discussion of honestly facing the hard things in life. It is a dream come true for me that she will join CEBV for an hour-long Zoom “In Conversation” on April 8.
Nora is the author of It’s OK to Laugh, No Happy Endings: A Memoir, and several other explorations of life’s immense challenges—possibly without happy endings but often with exciting new beginnings. Always focusing on the journey, her irreverence and empathy create a safe space to move through our feelings with honesty, pain, and laughter. We may not be able to control what happens to us, but we can surely face events squarely and create better paths forward—a wisdom that’s badly needed for those of us struggling in the trenches of advocacy and politics. Nora is no longer “Terrible,” and as we embrace individual and collective action to move through this perilous time, we don’t need to be terrible either! Join us for an hour you won’t soon forget. We’re incredibly excited to announce our next special event, a conversation with Harper Seldin, who has been deeply involved in litigation against discriminatory anti-LGBTQ+ laws on behalf of the ACLU. The conversation will be moderated by Joseph Darius Jaafari of LOOKOUT. Make no mistake—attacks on LGBTQ+ people are attacks on us all. It is unacceptable in a free country to target, prosecute, restrict, and criminalize anyone for who they are and acts they take to express their humanity.
The entire legal profession is being relentlessly hounded by the Trump Administration, which is seeking to cripple and subdue large law firms that represented people and organizations that litigated against the first Trump administration or Trump personally. In this climate, the ACLU’s fearless advocacy is vital to our survival as a democracy and free country.
